RURAL CELLULAR GETS OK TO BUY MAINE LICENSES

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-Rural Cellular Corp. said it received the regulatory approvals necessary to complete the purchase of the outstanding stock of Western Maine Cellular Inc.

Rural Cellular paid about $7.5 million for Western Maine Cellular, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Utilities Inc. The company said the addition of Maine links its existing coverage in central Maine to recently acquired cellular systems in Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and Massachusetts.

“This acquisition of WMC is of major strategic importance,” said Richard Ekstrand, Rural Cellular’s president and chief executive officer. “It enables us to establish a contiguous footprint encompassing portions of four New England states and the entire state of Vermont, positioning RCC as a leading provider of wireless communications services in the New England region.”

Rural Cellular also provides wireless services in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota, and the company said it plans to launch a personal communications services network in portions of South Dakota.
