Huawei, HP sign global Wi-Fi patent deal

The agreement with HP reflects the commercialization of Huawei’s research and the recognition of its intellectual property by a major global technology company and ecosystem partner

In sum – what to know:

Wi-Fi patents licensed – Huawei has granted HP a license covering certain Huawei Wi-Fi patents, with financial consideration under the multiyear global cross-licensing agreement.

Research reaches commercialization – The agreement marks a commercial milestone for Huawei’s long-term Wi-Fi research, including contributions to Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 technologies.

Licensing portfolio expands – Huawei says it now has more than 260 patent licensing agreements with major ICT companies across the U.S., Europe, Japan and South Korea, including Amazon, Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung.

Huawei and HP have signed a multiyear global patent cross-licensing agreement that includes a license for HP to use certain Huawei Wi-Fi patents, with corresponding remuneration and financial consideration under the agreement.

The deal represents a commercial milestone for Huawei’s long-running investment in Wi-Fi research and development. The Chinese vendor said the licensing of its technologies demonstrates that innovations developed through years of research are reaching the commercial market and being adopted by major technology companies. Financial terms and the length of the deal were not disclosed.

Huawei has been a significant contributor to successive generations of Wi-Fi technology. In Wi-Fi 6, the company said it was the first to apply orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA), a technology that can increase network capacity by up to four times and allow networks to support more connected devices.

Huawei also contributed technologies including multi-user MIMO, spatial multiplexing, BSS coloring, range extension and target wake time. The company noted these innovations helped increase Wi-Fi 6 transmission speeds while reducing co-channel interference and battery consumption.

Huawei has also contributed to core Wi-Fi 7 technologies, including multi-link operation, multi-RU per station, and preamble puncturing. These technologies address throughput bottlenecks and support lower latency and greater reliability. Huawei said additional technologies including 320 MHz bandwidth, TID-to-link mapping, NSTR/STR and EMLSR/EMLMR can double system performance compared with Wi-Fi 6.

The commercial significance of the HP agreement extends beyond the individual patents involved. Patent licensing allows technology contributors to generate revenue from standardized technologies while enabling other companies to incorporate those technologies into products without developing equivalent intellectual property independently.

Huawei now has more than 260 patent licensing agreements with major ICT companies across the U.S., Europe, Japan, and South Korea. Those agreements include companies such as Amazon, Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. Huawei also said it signed 34 licensing deals during 2025.

The agreement with HP reflects the commercialization of the vendor’s research and the recognition of its intellectual property by a major global technology company and ecosystem partner. The deal provides financial consideration for the Wi-Fi patents licensed to HP while also giving Huawei access to reciprocal patent rights from HP.

In a separate statement emailed to RCR Wireless News, HP clarified the deal was a “standard-essential license covering Wi-Fi technology – something used broadly across the industry and routine for companies whose products connect to Wi-Fi”.

The U.S. IT firm added this deal does not represent a broader strategic or commercial relationship, partnership or collaboration with Huawei.
