DALLAS-Northern Telecom Ltd. and AT&T Wireless Services Inc. said they will jointly develop and market enhancements to Nortel’s Companion Microcellular system, a digital wireless private branch exchange, to deliver Wireless Office Service from AWS in building and campus environments.

The integration of Nortel’s system with AWS’ personal communications services network using an intelligent Interim Standard-41 link will offer customers enhanced features such as intelligent call delivery, text messaging and message waiting indicator whether they are on premises or out on the AWS network.

The enhancements to Nortel’s Companion will expand service to ATW customers in markets served by 1900 MHz networks. Each Companion Microcellular system can support up to 3,000 users in a coverage area up to 10 million square feet.
