HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Telecommunications demonstrated its High Speed Circuit Switched Data technology on a Global System for Mobile communications network, which boosted data speeds from current 9.6 kilobits per second to 14.4 kilobits per second in a single traffic channel.
Nokia said applications on display included video on demand, music on demand, information services, large e-mail downloads, network games, re-broadcasting of TV programs and live video camera surveillance.
By multiplexing up to four channels into a single time slot, operators will be able to offer transmission rates up to 57.6 kilobits per second-six times more than currently available-and with the help of compression technology, data speeds can be increased even higher, said Nokia.
Nokia said its HSCSD solution requires no base-station hardware modifications, only the Nokia BSS7 software upgrade. Time slot or bit-rate upgrades and downgrades also are available to ensure that voice quality and capacity are not compromised. All Nokia base stations are fully compatible with this feature, said Nokia.
Nokia said the HSCSD solution is ideal for applications requiring constant bit rate and minimal transmission delay, putting GSM data on par with existing public switched telephone network modem services. As new data applications continue to emerge, an operator’s competitive advantage will depend on being first to market with these applications, said the manufacturer.
