ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group will purchase and deploy Excel Switching Corp.’s EXS infrastructure and switching platform as a network interface unit in certain wireless local loop markets worldwide, said Motorola.
An NIU allows Motorola CIG to connect its Code Division Multiple Access WiLL systems directly to the existing public switched telephone network switching centers. This enables Motorola CIG to offer operators reduced deployment and maintenance costs and increase the speed at which WLL service can be provided to new customers and service areas.
Motorola buys switches from DSC Communications Corp., which has been acquired by Alcatel Alsthom. Motorola and Alcatel compete for cellular infrastructure projects.
Motorola’s agreement with Excel is not exclusive.
