ERICSSON DELIVERS JAMBALA OPEN PLATFORM

ORLANDO, Fla.-L.M. Ericsson launched an open wireless intelligent network platform, called Jambala, initially available to Time Division Multiple Access Interim Standard 136 providers.

Jambala is the first telecom platform to fully leverage Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java platform, said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of the Java platform group at Sun.

The open architecture will aid wireless operators, which increasingly will need to focus on data applications as well as voice services, Ericsson said. The platform provides availability, reliability, scalability and Internet readiness. Its middleware was designed specifically for wireless communications using Ericsson’s Telorb operating system, the company said.

Third-party developers as well as in-house engineers can develop value-added services based on the Java technology used in Jambala, Sun said. Using Java technology enables the platform to interact with other parts of the network that use different standards, without having to worry about interoperability.

Jambala also has been designed to integrate multiple applications, such as messaging services and billing and account management.

“Basic voice wireless services are pretty much commodities now,” said Jane Zweig of Herschel Shosteck Associates Ltd. With Jambala, “Network operators can focus on their core business while partnering with third-party vendors to enable added-value services.”
