LETTERS

An open letter praising the UWCC

To the Editor:

I feel compelled to write a letter of congratulations to the entire UWCC organization. It is the first time in my company’s history that I have ever done this, but your rise to the wireless public consciousness is nothing short of exemplary. I want to draw attention to it here.

A year ago, TDMA technology was universally scoffed at by engineers, industry insiders and the media.

Clearly it was the technology that time forgot, and no one thought it more than just an interim step toward the “real” contenders, GSM and CDMA. Since that time, IS-136 has gained worldwide momentum and is being taken seriously by nearly everyone I speak with.

Is this a simple matter of public relations? If so, PR.com deserves a life-long contract for what it has done for the organization. Has there been a pooling of resources and renewed dedication by member companies of the consortium? If so, the UWCC leadership deserves to hold their offices forever.

In all of my years in this business, I have never seen such a dramatic turn-around. It is a testament to what can been done by a coordinated, determined, and perfectly executed technical and marketing plan. On behalf of the thousands of sales reps in the industry selling TDMA phones and service, we applaud your efforts. You can bet that Zsigo Wireless is ramping up its TDMA training materials for 1999 and beyond.

Split shows up geographically for better coverage

To the Editor:

I read Lynnette Luna’s opinion in RCR Oct. 5 and couldn’t agree more.

One other point about the two trade shows: Why do they put them in the same region each year? CTIA ’98 and PCIA ’98 were in Atlanta and Orlando. In 1999, it’s worse; both are in New Orleans. We plan to cut back on our booth size at PCIA ’99 due to the redundant location. Maybe if other vendors do the same, they’ll get the message. (How about a West Coast show and an East Coast show?)
