Count one less player in the U.S. trunked radio game. As of 18 October, Geotek Communications Inc. will be but a memory of yet another start-up with a good idea that just couldn’t make it work.
The company, which attempted to both provide the technology for and operate a Frequency Hopping Multiple Access enhanced Specialized Mobile Radio network, is laying off its 160 employees and selling off assets to recoup the US$600 million it raised to finance the venture.
Geotek filed for bankruptcy protection in June when it became clear it was not generating the revenues needed to fund operations.
