NOKIA LAUNCHES HIGH-CAPACITY GSM IN CHINA

HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. said it launched a new high-capacity Global System for Mobile communications system in Beijing, China.

Nokia said the new system offers a 10-fold capacity increase compared with conventional networks, switching capacity will more than double to serve 400,000 subscribers and network investment costs will significantly decrease.

The improvements will be possible with new products including of a mobile switching center, home location register, base station with integrated access transmission equipment, base station controller and a range of tools for training services, planning and information management, said Nokia.

“The number of mobile subscribers is expected to reach 300 million by the end of this year, and we anticipate around 1 billion users in 2005,” said Mikko Heikkonen, president, Network Systems, Nokia Telecommunications.

“Nokia’s vision of voice going wireless is being realized. With the increasing demand of advanced voice and data services in GSM networks, we are addressing capacity needs for operators with this new system.”
