ALCATEL TELECOM SECTOR REORGANIZES AMID TURMOIL

PARIS-Alcatel said a plan to reorganize its telecom business into market segments aims to address the rapid evolution of markets and recent stock-market turmoil.

The telecom sector will be organized into three segments:

The Network Business Group will focus on the full network operator market. The group will include switching and mobile infrastructure as well as network services, which eventually will be made into a new division to offer software and network management services, including facility management.

The Access and Transport Business Group will include transmission, access, submarine networks and space activities. The group will focus on Internet technologies.

The Enterprise and Consumer Business Group will include integrated voice and data enterprise networks and Global System for Mobile communications and Internet terminals.

“It is an important step toward better customer service and meeting our shareholder expectations,” said Serge Tchuruk, chief executive officer of the company.

Alcatel also said it will strengthen its network strategy, marketing and business development and project management functions.

Six members of an executive committee will share responsibility for the telecom sector. The executive committee will include Krish Prabhu, CEO of Alcatel USA and senior executive vice president of Alcatel Telecom; and Olivier Houssin, executive vice president in charge of the Enterprise and Consumer Business group.

The group will publish quarterly results by the middle of next year, said Alcatel.

The company has been the subject of numerous class-action lawsuits related to its merger with DSC Communications Corp., most of which claim the company withheld certain information that could have halted the merger.
