Research in Motion Ltd. announced it received a $1.3 million contract to supply its original equipment manufactured wireless modems to GMSI Inc.’s fleet management and communications systems. GMSI’s systems are sold to taxi, trucking and transit companies and are used to transmit data between field staff and the central office.
Hong Kong
Hongkong Telecom launched a dual-band Global System for Mobile communications network, supplied by Nokia Corp. Hongkong Telecom will use Nokia’s Intelligent Frequency Hopping solution, which is combined with the network, marking a first for Nokia, said the company. “Nokia’s IFH solution is unique as it utilizes very tight frequency reuse techniques as well as controlling interference,” said Pekka Soini, vice president, System Development, Radio Access Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. Nokia is providing equipment to cover both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequencies. The company said its IFH technology will add more capacity to GSM networks and improve network quality.
China
Lucent Technologies Inc.’s Microelectronics Group and Chinese manufacturer Eastcom announced they formed a collaborative technology initiative to develop and deliver Global System for Mobile communications handsets to the Chinese market. Eastcom is scheduled to deliver production quantities of the handsets to retail stores by January, said the companies.
United Kingdom
Digital Microwave Corp. announced Innova Europe Ltd., the United Kingdom-based subsidiary of Innova Corp. which recently merged with Digital Microwave, signed an ongoing contract with Orange Personal Communications Services Ltd. for digital radios. The signing follows a successful trial of Digital Microwave’s XP4 microwave radio product line. DMC said Innova Europe received initial orders in excess of $1.5 million for 38 GHz XP4 radios and accessories. These orders, scheduled for delivery by the end of December, will be installed in Orange’s UK GSM 1800 network. The XP4 radio is intended for use in networks requiring rapid, low-cost installations.
