SINGAPORE
Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group signed a contract valued at $23 million to upgrade M1’s digital wireless telephone network in Singapore. In addition to its SC 4852 base transceiver station, Motorola CIG will install two new base station types into M1’s network, its SC 614T and SC 611.
FINLDAND
L.M. Ericsson announced that Sonera, Finland’s largest telecommunications provider, awarded it a multi-year contract to provide Internet Protocol-based remote access platforms to enable corporate outsourcing services worldwide. Ericsson also will provide logistics, support, intergration and consulting services. Sonera will deploy Ericsson’s Tigris integrated access platform in Internet points-of-presence throughout its network infrastructure.
MALAYSIA
Nokia Corp. announced its smallest hand portable Global System for Mobile communications phone is available in Malaysia’s local market. The Nokia 8810 has a built-in antenna and an internal alert facility, said the company. With a standard battery, the stand-by time is 133 hours while the talk time lasts for two hours and 50 minutes. The phone also has a built-in infrared port that allows for name, number, note and message exchange.
UNITED KINGDOM
United Kingdom digital phone operator Orange plc announced it agreed to trial Unwired Planet Inc.’s wireless Internet technology on its Global System for Mobile communications network, the first UK-based provider to do so. Orange said it intends to offer next-generation, Internet-based information services via Unwired Planet’s Wireless Application Protocol system. Specifically, the company will trial Unwired Planet’s UP.Link Server Suite software platform and phone incorporating the UP.Browser.
BRAZIL
Telesystem International Wireless Inc. said its B-Band affiliate, Americel S.A., secured a long-term loan facility of up to $158 million from the National Economic Development Bank, Brazil’s governmental agency that administers federal funds for economic and social development. Americel S.A. launched commercial service in Brazil a year ago in the Centre-West region.
