Finland continues to lead the world in take-up of mobile services. The Ministry of Transport and Communications released a statement in late December estimating that for the first time the number of mobile telephone subscriptions has exceeded the number of fixed telephone subscriptions in the country.
The world long has watched Finland’s record-setting numbers, particularly regarding mobile penetration. In August, Finland became the first country to have more than a 50-percent mobile penetration rate, according to the Ministry. And by the middle of December, the country reported 56 percent, with 60 percent projected for sometime this spring.
In Finland, a country with 5.5 million inhabitants, there are a total of 2.9 million mobile subscribers, including analog NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) and digital GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) 900 and 1800 subscriptions.
