LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.-Motorola Inc. announced it has finalized an agreement to purchase the
research and product development portion of Lucent Technologies Inc.’s wireless handset facility in Piscataway,
N.J.
Motorola said it plans to operate the facility as a design center, focusing on digital wireless handset technology.
Most of the employees involved in research and development at the Piscataway facility have joined Motorola, said the
company.
The two companies signed a tentative agreement in November that was contingent upon Lucent
dissolving its partnership with Royal Philips Electronics. In October, Philips and Lucent announced they would
discontinue the consumer communications joint venture they established last year.
Lucent had indicated a desire to
rid itself of the assets returned to it following the break-up of the venture, including corded and cordless phones and
answering machines as well as the wireless handset business.
