LONDON-Millicom International Cellular S.A. announced that in the fourth quarter of 1998, its
worldwide operations added a record 212,664 net new cellular subscribers. Throughout all last year, MIC’s worldwide
cellular subscriber base grew to 1.4 million subscribers from 989,128.
“Current subscriber trends in Latin
America are very strong, with our operations posting the eighth consecutive quarter of record subscriber growth and a
132 percent annualized increase in (the) proportional subscriber base,” said Marc Beuls, MIS president and chief
executive officer. “Our operations in Africa also showed strong subscriber growth dynamics and will benefit
from the roll-out of our new license in Senegal during the current year.”
