Diablo Research Company said it plans to use Motorola Inc.’s ReFLEX chipset to extend two-
way paging transmission to utility-related applications by integrating the technology into computers, consumer devices
and industrial equipment.
BellSouth Cellular Corp. said it selected Compass Telecom Services L.L.C. as its vendor
for enhanced 911 technology to meet Federal Communications Commission Phase 1 compliance guidelines. Compass
Telecom Services is assisting with E911 implementation for BellSouth Cellular’s networks in Louisiana, Alabama,
Georgia and Tennessee.
ABB Inc. announced its Electric Metering division introduced a new meter data collection
and management system called the EnergyAxis AMR Server. The company said the server is fully integrated with its
EnergyAxis family of automated metering products, including the Alpha electronic meter and its recently announced
companion product-the Alpha Stars two-way wireless communication platform. The Alpha Stars solution was designed
to support various public wireless communications networks, but currently is configured for the Ardis network from
American Mobile Satellite Corp.
SkyTel Communications Inc. has formed an agreement to integrate its national
two-way paging network with eT Communications Inc.’s energy information solution, called the eT SmartLinX
System. Formerly a wireline-only architecture, the SmartLinX system monitors and controls commercial and
residential energy utilities.
Spectrum Resources L.P. announced it acquired seven towers in north-central Indiana for
Emergency Radio Service Inc. of Ligonier, Ind. Tenants include Ameritech Corp., Arch Communications Group Inc.
and SkyTel Communications Inc., among others. Spectrum Resources said it now owns 44 towers in several states and
has signed deals to acquire 61 more from various sellers. These acquisitions are expected to close during the next few
months, said the company.
Toshiba Corp. and Bellcore said they have created a joint research project focused on
developing the middleware layers necessary to integrate cellular transmission technologies with Internet protocol-based
communications.
