Ukraine
Orbcomm Global L.P. announced it has signed a service license agreement with
Transexpo Corp. to provide its satellite data services to the Ukraine. According to the agreement, Transexpo will take
delivery of an Orbcomm gateway, which includes a gateway earth station and a gateway control center. Commercial
launch is expected in the second half of the year.
Philippines
Ericsson Inc. announced it signed a $45 million
communications system contract with Globe Telecom in the Philippines. Ericsson will update Globe Telecom’s existing
Global System for Mobile communications system with a new base station controller, an operating support system and
more than 50 new base transceiver stations and provide 60 additional sites in the Cebu, Davao and Mindano
areas.
China
Tecnomen said it signed contracts with three China Unicom branch offices to supply voice-mail
systems. These contracts, along with the voice-mail system the company already provided to the Wenzhou Unicom
branch of China Unicom, provides up to 180,000 mailboxes, positioning Tecnomen as a major voice-mail system
supplier to China Unicom.
Canada
Clearnet Communications Inc. announced it raised $67 million from the issue
of 10.75-percent senior discount notes due 2009 at 59.26 percent of the principal amount of $113.2 million. The
offering was underwritten by TD Securities Inc. and co-managed by RBC Dominion Securities Inc., BT Alex Brown
Inc. and CIBC Wood Gundy Securities Inc., said Clearnet.
Argentina
WinStar Communications Inc. announced
it completed the purchase of 95 percent of Macrocom SA, a company holding a nationwide license for 400 megahertz
of spectrum in the 38 GHz band in Argentina. Through the acquisition, WinStar said it gains access to more than 88
million people in Argentina’s large cities, including 48 million people in Buenos Aires. The acquisition is part of
WinStar’s plan to expand its broadband network into the top 50 international markets within the next five years. Service
in Buenos Aires is expected to launch by Sept. 1.
