LUCENT, AT&T ENTER $1B EQUIPMENT AGREEMENT

MURRAY HILL, N.J.-Lucent Technologies Inc. announced it signed a four-year agreement with AT&T Wireless Services Inc. to provide an expected $1 billion in equipment and services for the next phase of its Time Division Multiple Access DigitalPCS network buildout in the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz markets and for ongoing business.

“We selected Lucent because of its aggressive and complete commitment to Enhanced Data for Global Evolution technology,” said Dan Hesse, president and chief executive officer of AT&T Wireless Services, in reference to the enhanced wireless transmission systems that will be common to TDMA and Global System for Mobile communications networks.

“Through our collaboration in the buildout of our U.S. markets, we are also laying the groundwork for building a third-generation wireless network that satisfies the criteria for IMT-2000, the International Telecommunication Union’s standard for third-generation wireless networks,” said Hesse.

Lucent said it will install its Autoplex Series II base stations and Mobile Switching Centers with the 5ESS Switch.
