BUSINESS BRIEFS

Pinnacle Towers Inc. acquired four towers in North Carolina and Texas in two transactions.

AirNet Communications Corp. said it is supplying additional infrastructure equipment, including base transceiver stations and a base station controller, to AirLink PCS, enabling AirLink to expand its mobile wireless network in its Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, Mich., basic trading areas.

The board of directors at RF Industries Ltd. authorized the repurchase of up to 360,000 shares-or approximately 10 percent of shares outstanding-in open market, negotiated or block transactions, said the company. “Under current market conditions, we have the opportunity to buy back our shares at what we believe are attractive prices. RFI’s strong cash position enables us to implement this repurchase program without adversely affecting the company’s investment plans,” said RFI President Howard Hill. RFI said it intends to use the shares acquired for various corporate purposes, including stock option exercises and to fund future acquisitions.

WirelessNorth said it has chosen Sanders’ PCS-Over-Cable Cable Microcell Integrator transceivers to improve its coverage and boost call capacity. Its small size allows the PCSOC CMI to be installed in difficult-to-reach places such as on water towers and rooftops and inside buildings and tunnels, among other places. It also can be used at traditional antenna sites.

Alltel Corp. completed two acquisitions: Durango Cellular Telephone Co. in Durango, Colo., and BellSouth Mobility’s cellular operations in the Dothan, Ala., area. In Colorado, Alltel initially plans to offer wireless phone and paging services in the counties of Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Montezuma, Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel, and portions of Archuleta County. The Dothan license, which consists of both Dale and Houston counties, had been an island that was completely surrounded by Alltel’s other service areas.

Paging Partners Corp. announced its merger with Aquis Communications Inc. is complete. Aquis first bought the paging operations of Bell Atlantic Mobile and then agreed to merge with Paging Partners. The new company is traded publicly.
