CHICAGO, Ill.-Telcordia Technologies Inc. said its AirBoss middleware server will be deployed as part of an integrated hardware, software and services solution developed by Symbol Technologies for Giant Food Inc.
The solution integrates global positioning system technology, Cellular Digital Packet Data public networks and Giant Foods’ enterprise local area network to manage the company’s transportation fleet.
With application software developed by Noblestar Systems and handsets provided by Symbol, the solution automates Giant Foods’ transportation activity reporting, such as dropping and moving equipment, pre-trip inspections, entering odometer mileage, communicating delivery delays and updating driver assignments.
Giant Foods operates more than 1,700 trailers and 225 tractors with some 300 drivers making 2,700 trips and 5,500 stops a week. When on the road, and outside the LAN coverage, the AirBoss module automatically switches over to a CDPD network. A GPS link keeps track of the vehicles’ position at all times.
