DALLAS-Nortel Networks introduced an end-to-end General Packet Radio Service solution based on its Passport ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and Contivity Extranet switches.
The Nortel Networks GPRS solution provides Global System for Mobile communications and Time Division Multiple Access digital wireless operators with the network infrastructure for future Internet protocol-based mobile services, said the company.
With the GPRS solution, operators can offer wireless Internet access, e-commerce, virtual private networking and other services at speeds up to 115 kilobits per second.
Nortel Networks said consumers will have access to these services using mobile phones, personal digital assistants, palmtop and notebook computers, among others.
