SWINDON, England-Lucent Technologies Inc. announced plans to deliver PacketGSM, a technology that will allow both voice and data to travel on more cost-efficient packet networks within a Global System for Mobile communications infrastructure.
“PacketGSM technology is intended to offer a real path towards the much talked-about convergence of fixed, mobile and multimedia traffic,” said Carlo Baravalle, marketing vice president for Lucent’s GSM/UMTS group.
PacketGSM will extend the benefits of General Packet Radio Service, which sends data traffic in packets from base stations through an overlay network. The technology will support packet data and voice for multimedia applications, enabling a smooth migration to third-generation services using either wideband-Code Division Multiple Access or enhanced data rates for GSM evolution radio access, said Lucent.
Lucent intends to demonstrate the technology in the third quarter and begin customer trials early next year.
