MADRID, Spain-Telefonica Moviles, part of the Telefonica Group S.A., Madrid, Spain, announced it gained 822,487 new customers during the first quarter of this year, more than triple the net additions posted during the same period a year ago.
The Spanish wireless carrier had 5.72 million customers as of March 31, of which 1.54 million were added during the prior six months.
“During the past quarter, the migration of customers from analog to [Global System for Mobile communications] services has increased as a result of the promotions in the digital market,” Telefonica said.
Of its 823,396 MoviLine GSM customers at the close of the latest complete quarter, Telefonica said more than 100,000 are prepaid.
The proportion of prepaid to post-paid subscribers is even greater in Telefonica’s MoviStar service, which operates on both GSM 900 MHz and GSM 1800 MHz frequency bands. Of its 4.89 million MoviStar customers, 2.5 million are prepaid. The total number of post-paid and prepaid MoviStar customers has more than doubled since March 1998, Telefonica said.
