COMSAT WINS NAVY CONTRACT

BETHESDA, Md.-Comsat Corp. won a satellite services contract from the Navy, with a maximum value of $111.9 million during a five-year period, said the company.

Under terms of the agreement, Comsat Mobile Communications will provide global satellite service using the Inmarsat system for 64 kilobits per second high-speed data, along with voice and multimedia communications. These services will be provided to any of the Navy’s 11 deployed battle groups and their associated Marine amphibious readiness groups, and include ship-to-shore, ship-to-ship and shore-to-ship communications, said Comsat.

Additionally, the contract provides terrestrial connectivity to Navy facilities in Norfolk, Va.; Wahiawa, Hawaii; and Naples, Italy.

The Navy will lease and pay for the services on an as-needed basis, said the company. The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command already has issued the first service delivery order for $1.9 million, to begin July 1.
