TIA: TELECOM EXPORTS UP

ARLINGTON, Va.-According to statistics compiled by the Telecommunications Industry Association, U.S. exports of telecommunications equipment for first quarter 1998 totaled nearly $5.3 billion, and the greatest increases were in paging alert devices and cordless telephones, which jumped 95 percent and 42 percent, respectively.

“Despite overall exports being down, telecom infrastructure development remains crucial to economic growth, and as a result, countries are continuing to invest in U.S. telecom equipment, particularly fiber-optic and wireless technologies,” said TIA President Matthew J. Flanigan.

Communication satellites and cellular telephone exports decreased in 1998 by 29 percent and 3 percent, respectively, said TIA.
