SAN FRANCISCO-3Com Corp. and Sun Microsystems outlined plans to develop a reference port for the Java 2 Platform Micro Edition, Sun’s Java runtime environment for consumer products, for 3Com’s Palm operating system software later this year.
The companies also agreed to make Sun’s K Virtual Machine, a key component of the Java 2 Platform Micro Edition, available on the Palm OS software. The Palm OS software will serve as a primary reference platform for application development using KVM, said the companies.
The companies said they will develop an end-to-end solution for delivering content and Java applications to Palm Computing platform devices via Sun’s software products, and they are exploring opportunities to integrate Sun’s software with 3Com’s Palm.net wireless Internet access and messaging service for the Palm VII device.
In other news from the JavaOne Developer Conference last week, Sun and NTT DoCoMo delivered the first prototypes of NTT DoCoMo’s Java-enabled i-mode wireless phones and services, and Motorola Inc. demonstrated KVM applications on its PageWriter 2000x.
