MANNESMANN’S D2 TO LAUNCH WAP SERVICE, REPORTS HIGH SMS USE

FRANKFURT, Germany-Mannesmann’s D2 mobile carrier said sales for the first half of 1999 increased by 34 percent to $2.47 million compared with the same period the previous year.

Mannesmann saw continued explosive growth in messages sent with short message service during the first six months. During the month of June, the company said, D2 subscribers sent about 145 million messages. Since the end of 1998, the message volume has increased 140 percent.

The carrier announced its mobile Internet Wireless Application Protocol-based service is scheduled to be commercially available starting in September.

Average monthly revenue, including handset sales, was about $62 per subscriber for the six-month period, said Mannesmann. As of June 30, the carrier had 7.3 million subscribers.
