HELSINKI-Nokia Corp. announced it won a contract from Telenor Mobil in Norway to provide a General Packet Radio Service core network pre-release solution. The system will be used for Telenor’s pilot project, expected to be operational in November.
The system is viable for commercial GPRS services and could be used commercially during the first quarter of 2000, according to Nokia.
Nokia also announced it is changing the name of its infrastructure arm, Nokia Telecommunications, to Nokia Networks, effective Oct. 1.
The name change indicates an industry shift toward the increasing importance of applications, service integration and Internet Protocol networking, said the company.
Nokia Networks will create a Customer Operations division, which will strengthen Nokia’s range of customer services and system integration capabilities for telecom, datacom and IP networks, added the company.
Nokia Networks also will consist of the Network Systems, Radio Access Systems, Broadband Solutions and Professional Mobile Radio divisions, said Nokia.
