DUBLIN, Ireland-Esat Digifone, an Irish Global System for Mobile communications carrier, announced the first service in Ireland that allows customers to access Internet information via mobile phones.
The service, called dot digifone-on-line, is based on Wireless Application Protocol technology.
Users can access news, airline information, stock prices and other information with the service. Esat Digifone signed agreements with several companies to provide information through the service. The service, currently being trialed by Digifone customers, is awaiting commercial availability of WAP handsets from manufacturers in mid-October.
Digifone is jointly owned by Esat Telecom Group and Telenor, the Norwegian telecommunications operator.
