NOKIA AIMS TO ESTABLISH HIPERLAN 2 AS STANDARD FOR WIRELESS LAN

HELSINKI-Nokia Wireless Business Communications announced its participation in the new HiperLAN2 Global Forum to promote the HiperLAN 2 standard worldwide.

The standard will enable high-speed connectivity for mobile communications in corporate, public and home environments and provides wireless transfer of data between portable devices and access points at speeds of up to 54 Megabits per second.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute is developing the HiperLAN 2 standard and should finalize a final specification at the end of the year. The first HiperLAN 2 compliant products should be commercially available in volume by 2002, said Nokia. In the meantime, Nokia will work to establish HiperLAN 2 as the global standard of choice for local area network design in order to ensure vendor interoperability.

Nokia entered the wireless LAN market in May 1999 by introducing wireless LAN cards and access points.
