SBC EARNINGS RISE DESPITE M&A COSTS

SAN ANTONIO, Texas-SBC Communications Inc. reported revenues for the third quarter increased 9.4 percent to $12.5 billion from $11.4 billion reported for the same period last year, excluding one-time items.

The company recorded net earnings of $2 billion, or 57 cents per share, compared with net earnings of $1.7 billion, or 49 cents per share, for third-quarter 1998.

SBC acquired Ameritech on Oct. 8. Its total wireless subscriber revenues increased 25 percent, driven by the strength of existing operations and by the third-quarter acquisition of Cellular Communications of Puerto Rico, which added 375,000 subscribers.

SBC also completed its acquisition of Comcast Cellular Corp. during the quarter, which added another 862,000 subscribers. The company’s domestic wireless subscribers totaled 10.3 million, an increase of 24.7 percent from the same time last year.
