WI-LAN FILES IPR STATEMENT ON 3G

CALGARY, Alberta-Wi-LAN Inc. announced it filed an intellectual property statement with the International Telecommunication Union offering to make its Multi-code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (MC-DSSS) patented technology available for licensing.

Wi-LAN’s IP statement is based on the company’s belief that the CDMA-based 3G proposals under consideration use MC-DSSS technology. The IP statement targets the ITU’s third-generation standard for mobile-phone networks, said Wi-LAN. The company said its technology enables multiple Code Division Multiple Access codes to be assigned to a single user in a CDMA network, thus increasing throughput.

“We have long believed that our patented multi-code technology is a major improvement over CDMA,” said Dr. Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer.

Wi-LAN also announced it began trading common stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange last week. The company became public in March 1998.
