MCCAIN BILL PROMOTES TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

WASHINGTON-Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) introduced legislation to bolster U.S. high technology by lifting the cap of visas and awarding grants to students and older Americans to improve technology-related skills.

“Many companies are finding that there are more jobs to be filled than qualified candidates,” said McCain. “When our companies cannot hire qualified people to work for them, they cannot compete globally and we all lose.”

The skilled worker shortage has hit the wireless industry and other high-tech sectors hard.

Under the McCain bill, the cap on H-1B visas would be lifted through 2006.
