Nokia wins GPRS contracts

HELSINKI-Telefonica Moviles of Spain, with approximately 8 million cellular subscribers, signed an agreement with Nokia Corp. for the deployment of a General Packet Radio Services core network.

Also, Nokia and the Shanghai branch of China United Telecommunications Corp. signed a memorandum of understanding to supply a General Packet Radio Services trial network in Shanghai, Nokia said.

Nokia will equip both Telefonica and Shanghai Unicom with Internet Protocol backbone network infrastructure, the Nokia serving GPRS support node, the Nokia gateway GPRS support node and the Nokia charging gateway, said Nokia.

The new Telefonica network is expected to be operational in the second half of next year.
