ATLANTA-BellSouth Cellular Corp. and wireless-location company SigmaOne Communications Corp. announced an agreement calling for BellSouth to conduct a market trial of SigmaOne’s Sigma 5000 Advanced Mobile Phone Service/Time Division Multiple Access network-based location system.
SigmaOne’s location technology combines time difference of arrival and angle of arrival technologies to provide location fixes accurate to better than 300 feet. Mark Licht, president of SigmaOne, said the combination of the two technologies allows the company to locate callers in a variety of environments 50 percent more accurately than the individual technologies can on their own.
SigmaOne will deploy equipment at BellSouth cell sites, Licht said, although the exact number of sites to be included in the trial has yet to be determined. The trial is expected to last three to four months, he added.
SigmaOne is conducting trials with two other carriers, the names of which have not been disclosed, said Licht.
