Moroccan GSM consortium hires PT Inovacao

LISBON, Portugal-Portugal Telecom announced that PT Inovacao S.A., a research and development company in Portugal, signed a $6.1 million contract to provide Moroccan mobile telecommunications consortium Meditelecom with a prepaid card solution for use in its Global System for Mobile communications network in Morocco.

Meditelecom is a consortium owned in equal parts by Portugal Telecom International and Telefonica Intercontinental. The group was awarded the license in July and will be the first competitor to government-owned Itissalat Al Maghrib GSM, which operates both a GSM network and a Nordic Mobile Telephone 450 network.

Hewlett-Packard Portugal also will take part in the prepaid project as a sub-contractor, said Portugal Telecom.
