Willard (Will) K. Shaw, who recently retired from the telecommunications industry, died Dec. 31, in Laguna Niguel, Calif., at the age of 72.
Raised in Iowa, Shaw was a two-time all-state football and basketball athlete at Marshalltown High. He was awarded the first Nile Kinnick Scholarship at the University of Iowa in 1945, graduating in 1950 with a degree in economics and science.
He went on to serve in the U.S. Army after college and was unanimously selected for the “All European Army Football Team.”
In 1958, Shaw joined the Radio Corp. of America (RCA), spending 24 years with the company before retiring in 1982.
He used his knowledge of the communications industry to start his own company, Dynatel Radio Access Inc., which specializes in two-way radio and cellular retail sales and service. Shaw retired from his business, now owned by his son, David, in 1989.
Not ready to settle down with retired life, he put his experience to use in various radio relay businesses in the Los Angeles and Dallas areas.
Shaw retired for the third time in 1997, and moved to the Laguna Niguel area in 1998. He was active in the El Niguel Country Club and served on the Entertainment Committee and was founder and co-captain of the Silver Seniors Golf Competition Team.
Survivors include wife Patricia; sons David, Placentia, Calif., and Michael, La Selva Beach, Calif.; daughter Kathryn Kampman, Yorba Linda, Calif.; brother Don, Lakin, Kan.; and sisters Mary Hughs, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Susan Looney, Evansville, Ind.
