SINGAPORE-Residents of Singapore can now surf the Internet without getting caught in those annoying wires.
Motorola Inc. announced an agreement with SingTel Mobile to provide Motorola’s first Global System for Mobile communications tri-band Internet-access-enabled telephone-the L-series-for traditional voice calls as well as Internet connectivity utilizing the company’s Mobile Internet Exchange platform.
Using the Wireless Application Protocol, the communication platform allows users to view information on the phone display. The phone allows access to information such as stock quotes, foreign exchange rates, yellow page directories and bus guides as well as the ability to send free Internet messages to registered mobile phones or free Internet pages to registered pagers.
“This is an integral part of SingTel Mobile’s effort to make our e-ideas work for and benefit our customers,” said Lucas Chow, chief executive officer of SingTel. “Instead of making a voice call on their mobile phones, they can now scroll through a menu on their WAP phones to get information and make transactions in a fast and very discreet manner.”
