KANSAS CITY, Mo.-UbiquiTel Holdings Inc., a member of the Sprint PCS Network, said it expanded its service area in an agreement with Sprint PCS. The deal calls for UbiquiTel to extend into 10 states, representing a licensed population of more than 7 million people.
The expansion will provide UbiquiTel with coverage in northern California, Idaho, eastern Washington, Montana, Utah, southern Indiana and western Kentucky, with some fringe coverage into Wyoming, Nevada and Illinois.
UbiquiTel expects to expand in a four-month transition period as it assumes management responsibility for existing Sprint PCS service and network operations in Spokane, Wash. Sprint PCS will transfer 69 cell sites and equipment in various stages of development, one kiosk, a field operations office, one switch and rights to manage all subscribers within the service area to UbiquiTel.
“We are very excited to expand our relationship with Sprint PCS,” said Don Harris, chief executive officer of UbiquiTel. “We believe this arrangement allows UbiquiTel to very quickly extend the Sprint PCS footprint into some very attractive markets, expanding service that customers in metropolitan areas like San Francisco and Seattle already enjoy. The Sprint PCS affiliation program has proven to be beneficial, and we believe this expanded relationship will enable UbiquiTel to become the premiere provider of wireless services in these markets.”
