Samsung releases multislot GPRS handset

CANNES, France-Lucent Technologies Inc.’s Microelectronics Group announced that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has released the industry’s first multislot Class 8 General Packet Radio Service mobile handset.

The new handset is based on Lucent’s Sceptrer 3 GPRS chipset and Optimay GPRS protocol software.

“Our unique, one-stop-shop GPRS solutions enable handset manufacturers to bring GPRS products to market faster and also strategically position them well as providers of future third generation services,” said Andy Craigen, manager of Wireless Terminals Applications for Lucent’s Microelectronics Group. “Samsung is well positioned to compete in what will be an extremely fierce market by being the first global manufacturer to deliver a Class 8 GPRS handset to consumers.”
