WASHINGTON-President Clinton and other administration officials met with high-tech, security and civil-liberty representatives at the White House last Tuesday to address the recent wave of cyber attacks. The attacks come as the wireless industry makes inroads into e-commerce.
Internet and telecom executives agreed to create a mechanism to share information about cyber attacks and ways to curb them.
High-tech leaders stressed they did not want heavy government involvement in solving the problem.
Clinton asked Congress to approve a supplemental budget request of $9 million for fiscal 2000, which began Oct. 1, 1999, for cyber security. Clinton is seeking $2 billion for cyber security in his fiscal 2001 budget request.
Appearing before a Senate subcommittee last Thursday, Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louis Freeh said cyber security is a big challenge but one that can be attained.
