Mexican paging industry endures cellular CPP

MEXICO CITY-In Mexico, paging has been around for more than 40 years, and for a long time, only a handful of companies provided the service. That presented a perfect situation for the industry to have achieved a strong product, brand recognition, a well-developed distribution and marketing structure, and mainly, a high-penetration level. Instead, paging in Mexico was for decades a marginal communications service, mainly adopted by doctors and a few other professionals, rather than by the mainstream public.

The figures speak for themselves. In the beginning of 1995, there were slightly less than 200,000 paging subscribers. In a country with a population of 96 million, this was only 0.2-percent penetration.

But now things have changed. During the past few years, the main players in this sector have made a serious effort to gain new subscribers. Some have been successful and have nearly the same number of subscribers as the entire nation had a few years ago.

SkyTel Comunicaciones Mtel is one paging company that has helped change the industry. Since it began service in 1992, it has achieved steady growth, forcing other service providers to change their approaches to the market.
