NEW ORLEANS-Qualcomm Inc. unveiled two products designed for the Globalstar satellite system at CTIA’s Wireless 2000 show.
The first is the GSP-1620 Satellite Packet Data Modem designed to deliver digital data communications for urban and remote areas using Qualcomm’s Code Division Multiple Access technology along with the Globalstar satellite system. Production quantities are planned for the fall.
Qualcomm also reported it will demonstrate Internet access and packet data capability via the Globalstar system.
After successfully completing development tests of packet data for Globalstar, Qualcomm said the service will be ready for commercial field trials late this summer, followed by a phased integration available to all Globalstar service providers.
In related news, Globalstar USA said it added American Wireless to its list of satellite phone service distributors.
American Wireless is a master agent for the consumer wireless industry-an interface between wireless carriers, equipment manufacturers and some 4,300 wireless retailers.
