BT restructures into four units, forms IP business

LONDON-British Telecommunications announced a major restructuring that creates four businesses in high-growth areas, including wireless. BT Wireless is the newly formed international mobile business emphasizing mobile data and next-generation services.

The company also created Ignite, a data-centric broadband Internet Protocol business focused on corporate and wholesale markets; BTopenworld, a mass market Internet business focused on broadband services; and Yell, an international directories and e-commerce business.

BT’s Wireless turnover and equity subscribers are expected to more than double in the next three years, the company said. It will focus on international expansion, with the proportion of non-United Kingdom turnover increasing from about 35 percent for the year to March 2000 to 60 percent in three years.

BT’s Wireless holdings include BT Cellnet in the United Kingdom and Telfort Mobile in the Netherlands, along with stakes in other mobile companies throughout Europe, Asia and in Canada.
