White House abstains from taking stand on telecom tax

WASHINGTON-The White House confirmed on Thursday it has not taken an official position on the move to repeal the tax on talking, notwithstanding a separate statement submitted in a report on electronic commerce.

The repeal of the 3-percent excise tax on telecommunications was a central theme of a report delivered to Congress last week by the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce. The report came under fire because it was not approved by a two-thirds super-majority.

A separate statement contained in the report, submitted by administration members on the commission, said the move to repeal the tax should be reviewed and perhaps phased out.

The White House press office said the administration would take a position on the legislation if it emerges from committee. Today the bill has 67 co-sponsors in the House and seven in the Senate.
