NEW YORK-Millicom International Cellular SA announced that its wholly owned Tele2 (UK) Ltd. subsidiary won a Wireless Telegraphy Act license from the U.K. Radio Communications Authority. The license allows Tele2 to develop a commercial broadband fixed wireless access service in the United Kingdom.
The license permits Tele2 to provide wireless Internet access and broadband services nationwide, using up to 2 by 84 megahertz of spectrum within the 3.6 GHz to 4.2 GHz band. The license is in addition to a previously awarded public telecommunications operator’s license.
The company conducted a 16-month trial during which it provided Internet connectivity at speeds of up to 2 Megabits per second for business customers in Reading, United Kingdom, Millicom said. The service will be expanded nationwide with service in the U.K. cities of Leicester, Nottingham, Bradford and Leeds by May.
“The success of this concept, which is already operational in the UK, enables us to explore the expansion of e-commerce and hosting services, which will also be rolled out across MIC’s existing operations in Latin America and Asia,” said Marc Beuls, MIC’s president and chief executive officer.
