Alcatel, Fujitsu form venture to develop 3G systems

PARIS-Alcatel and Fujitsu Ltd. said they will establish a joint venture to develop and manufacture next-generation mobile communications network systems.

According to Alcatel, the agreement aims to leverage the technological strengths of both companies and maximize development efficiency and economies of scale to attain a leading position in the third-generation mobile communications market.

The venture will distribute its products through each company’s sales organizations, with Alcatel having primary responsibility in Europe, while Japan will be handled by Fujitsu.

“This alliance is a major step forward for Alcatel’s mobile activities,” explained Jean-Pierre Halbron, senior executive vice president of Alcatel. “The creation of an Alcatel-Fujitsu company offers the opportunity to have a [Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service] offering ahead of the competition while ensuring efficient and cost-effective use of [research and development] resources and skills.”
