TORONTO-Microcell Connexions Inc. and Research In Motion Ltd. announced their intent to proceed with trials to jointly test mobile data services based on General Packet Radio Services wireless technology and incorporate RIM’s “Always On, Always Connected” features.
The companies noted that the joint trial will allow GPRS technology to be tested in a real-world setting where they can evaluate a number of elements of GPRS, including the performance of GPRS equipment, the behavior of GPRS on Microcell’s Global System for Mobile communications network, the data speeds that can be supported and the robustness of the applications under live conditions.
The live technical trials are expected to begin this year using specially equipped GSM sites established by Microcell in Waterloo, Ontario.
