BellSouth to deploy Ericsson servers

STOCKHOLM, Sweden-BellSouth Mobility said it plans to deploy up to 56 Ericsson Datacom Inc. AXC 627 Tigris Access Servers in 28 of its mobile switching centers.

The servers, part of Ericsson’s Integrated Access System wireless solution, will complement an ongoing upgrade of BellSouth’s Time Division Multiple Access infrastructure, enabling wireless e-mail and fax capabilities, mobile Internet access and next-generation services via Wireless Application Protocol technology.

“It’s an impressive, forward-thinking move by BellSouth Mobility,” said Mike Thurk, president of Ericsson Datacom. “By placing Tigris access servers throughout their TDMA network, rather than centralizing their Internet gateways to only a few switching centers, BellSouth is now ready to accommodate the inevitable demand for next-generation wireless services.”

Ericsson noted the upgrade will allow BellSouth’s wireless network to be converted directly to Internet Protocol packet data, and vice versa, allowing information to flow unimpeded between the two networks.
