Carriers must leverage strengths to compete with conglomerates

BOSTON-Media conglomerates will likely control the content available to wireless devices, according to a new report from Strategy Analytics, and wireless carriers’ only hope of competing with them is to leverage location-based services, existing transaction and customer profile databases, and the national reaches of their networks.

“Success in porting content to the wireless world will depend on effectively meeting the core emotional and psychological needs of users for safety/security, reinforcement of beliefs and values, and fun,” said David Kerr, vice president of wireless services, commenting on the report “Wireless Content: Winning the Fight for Mindshare.”

“There is no doubt that the `networked youth’ segment will be the early driver of this market,” said Kerr.

“Music, games, puzzles and challenges related to music and pop icons will be the earliest hits. Beyond this, there likely will be strong interest in audio and video content related to family health, family communications and family values from the `concerned parent’ segment.”
